Building Stronger Communities Through Grassroots Action

With the current cuts to resources and opportunities at the federal level we have to face the reality of the situation. The reality is that if we want to correct the negative impact on the people these cuts create we must organize in our neighborhoods and our communities.  We must continue to build our impact through mutual interests, issues, and concerns.

After the 2024 election, the Jackson County Dems continued to put in the work, increasing our presence and involvement in the community.  Here are some of our accomplishments over the last year:

  1. We continue to make connections with multiple community organizations, providing the opportunity to help vulnerable people in our community.
  2. We are here!  We are building our grassroots organizing and increasing our presence in the entire county.  This map behind me has little blue pins in the neighborhoods of our members.  This map reminds me that our work is in front of us.
  3. We are planning outreach social events in the surrounding communities. These events will bring local Dems together with their local elected officials and their local county party.  By listening to and engaging with people, we can provide insight to candidates on the relevant issues and serve as a conduit between local people and the candidates.  This reinforces the fact that we are here and we can work together to build a better community.

  6. We are increasing our involvement in local government. Our goal is to have someone in the room at all local government open meetings.  We are building our website blog for attendees to post a summary of these meetings, raising awareness of any issues or concerns, and providing resources for immediate action to be taken.
  7. One example of how our local organizing can and does work is the Leoni Township rezoning issue.  Leoni is considering rezoning a previous golf course to heavy industrial. We were able to collaborate with other people in opposition to this rezoning and send over 400 letters of opposition to the application.   As a result of this collaboration, the township board is reconsidering the zoning application.

I have one question to ask. What are you going to do about it?  Will you accept the current adverse effects on our communities?  Or will you continue to be engaged and involved?  Will you join us in building the connections, collaborations, and coalitions we need to strengthen our communities? With our grassroots organizing, we are strengthening our communities in all areas, from food sovereignty and insecurity to protecting the environment. Join me! Show up for those who are not able to be there, standing up for those who are most vulnerable, speak up for those who otherwise feel as they have no voice.  Because when we join together and lift each other’s voices in support of those experiencing barriers to resources and opportunities, we can all appreciate the constitutional promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
