“If you can build a $25+ million chapel, you can build a shelter.” – Jeff Cooley Chair of Hillsdale County Democratic Committee, a CD5 affiliate of JCDC.
- Hillsdale College raised over $200 million in one year.
- They built a chapel that cost nearly $30 million.
- They built a new media center and named it after Pat Sajak.
Now, they’re expanding the library again. But Hillsdale still doesn’t have a homeless shelter.

I realize that it isn’t their responsibility, but when you’re the wealthiest institution in the county, sitting on tax-exempt land with a billion-dollar endowment and raising hundreds of millions of dollars for new buildings, people have the right to question why you choose not to help?
Larry Arnn could spend two hours on the phone and raise enough money to build a shelter and staff it for years. Few people have as many billionaires on speed dial as Mr. Arnn, but he only uses that list to benefit the college, not the city.
They say they’re about Christian values. Christianity isn’t a $30 million chapel. It’s feeding the hungry and housing the poor. Christianity is loving your neighbor, not just the people that write six-figure checks.
If they can raise hundreds of millions for buildings, why not raise a million for people? If you can build a $25+ million chapel, you can build a shelter.
