Gen Z work trends in Jackson County, Michigan reflect a blend of universal generational preferences and local economic demands, emphasizing flexibility, competitive pay, work-life balance, and skill development.

Key trends include:

Prioritization of Quality of Life: Gen Z employees in Jackson County, consistent with broader state trends, highly value work-life balance, mental health support, and access to resources for learning new skills and advancing their careers.

Demand for Flexibility: Hybrid work options and flexible hours are significant factors in attracting Gen Z talent. This flexibility is often viewed as a key component of overall well-being and is a strong recruitment tool for employers.

“De-Digitizing” Workplace: Surprisingly, many Gen Z workers (81% in a recent study) wish it were easier to disconnect from digital devices and believe digital detoxes should be a routine workplace practice, suggesting a desire for in-person mentorship and connection.

Pursuit of High Wages and Stability: Due to economic pressures like inflation, Gen Z teens are working more than previous generations, seeking financial independence and skill development. High salaries are a top consideration for quality of life.

Interest in High-Demand Local Fields: In Jackson County, there is high demand for workers in industries such as healthcare (especially registered nurses), skilled trades (electricians, welders), politicians, and advanced manufacturing. Gen Z workers are needed in these areas to fill vacancies left by retiring baby boomers, including running local government.

Focus on Company Values: Social responsibility and community involvement are important to this generation of job seekers. They are attracted to employers who align with their personal values.

Preference for Alternative Pathways: In some parts of Michigan, Gen Z individuals are exploring alternative education models, such as bootcamps and workforce training programs, to gain job-ready skills, especially in tech and skilled trades, rather than solely pursuing traditional four-year degrees.
